I had a conversation recently with a new client of mine that just moved their family to the Des Moines area. When I asked how they were liking things so far, they said they really haven’t done much exploring to see what all Des Moines/Central Iowa has to offer. So I thought I would put together a fun, family-friendly “activities and attractions guide” to highlight some cool things about our city! Here it is, tell me what I missed and what should be included next time!
Morning:
Science Center of Iowa: Start your day with a visit to the Science Center of Iowa. Kids can enjoy interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and live science demonstrations. It's both fun and educational.
Blank Park Zoo: After the Science Center, head over to Blank Park Zoo. Kids will love seeing animals like lions, giraffes, and penguins. There are often feeding and petting opportunities as well.
Lunch: 3. Eat at Fong's Pizza: Fong's Pizza is a unique pizza place that serves fusion-style pizzas. It's a fun spot for kids with a creative menu that includes things like crab rangoon pizza.
Afternoon: 4. Pappajohn Sculpture Park: Take a stroll through the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, located in downtown Des Moines. Kids can marvel at the impressive sculptures, and it's a great place to get some fresh air.
The Playroom: Head to The Playroom, an indoor play center where kids can climb, slide, and have a blast. It's an excellent option for some active playtime.
Dinner: 6. Dinner at Zombie Burger: Zombie Burger offers a quirky and fun dining experience. They serve delicious burgers and shakes in a zombie-themed setting that kids will find amusing.
Evening: 7. Principal Park: If your kids are baseball fans, catch a game at Principal Park, home to the Iowa Cubs. Even if it's not baseball season, the park can be a nice place for a leisurely walk.
Jester Park: If you have a little time to spare and the weather is nice, head to Jester Park, located just outside of Des Moines. Enjoy a walk, have a picnic, or even rent paddleboats if available.
Ice Cream Treat: 9. Snookies Malt Shop: End your day with a sweet treat at Snookies Malt Shop. They offer delicious ice cream and malts in a cozy, retro setting.
This itinerary should provide a well-rounded kid-friendly tour of Des Moines, with a mix of educational experiences, outdoor fun, and tasty food stops. Be sure to check the opening hours and availability of attractions before your visit!
